About me

I’ve been a fan of cooking for as long as I can remember. Some of my favourite childhood memories are of cooking with my mum. She started teaching me how to cook when I was just a toddler and she used to let me play with pastry like most kids play with play-doh. When I became vegetarian in my teens I started to help make my own dinner, and that’s when I really fell in love with trying new recipes and tweaking them to make my own. I now love experimenting in the kitchen, and have great fun making complicated things from scratch (like tempeh and seitan).

I’m not a blogger, I just have a few recipes and techniques that I want to remember and share with anyone else who might be interested.

I’m vegan for the animals. While most of what I eat is relatively healthy, if you’re interested in a whole-foods plant based diet then you might be in the wrong place.

I started this blog about a year before I went vegan, so my older posts may include non-vegan options or mention being vegetarian.

I live in Carlisle with my husband Dr Veg, a beardy scientist who never complains when I spend ages taking pictures of our dinner before letting him eat.

  1. Hi a very belated thank you for following my blog freshbyfriska.wordpress.com! I’m very much a newbie to the blogging world.. and much like you, love experimenting and pottering about in the kitchen! Do tell.. what is your ‘unusual’ array of pets?

    1. Hi, thanks for following me too! It’s constantly changing, but we’ve currently got spiny mice, lizards, an aquarium, scorpions, a hermit crab, and a tarantula. My husband is an entomologist so we usually have a lot of insects. I’d really love to get a dog but we live in a flat so it’s not really practical.

  2. I love veggies and eating healthy, too. Alas, I could never give up my animal protein, but I have learned how to keep it to a moderate size in inject a lot more variety into my daily meal plans. I’m always on the lookout for new ways to use veggies, though – love your blog!

  3. Hello Mrs. Veg!
I am also a vegetarian who only really became curious and loved to be in the kitchen once I adopted vegetarianism. Before then, my husband did all the cooking (he worked in a kitchen for 10+ years). I look forward to checking out more of your recipes!

  4. Hey Mrs Veg! I just discovered your blog and I love it!! You sound like such a cool person. I wish I had your passion for cooking. I was a terrible cook until I went plant-based two years ago and now I’m okay. Unlike you, however; I like to make simple food. I’m more interested in ‘eating’ than I am in ‘cooking’. Anyway, it’s a pleasure to e-meet you! Celeste πŸ™‚

  5. Always nice to meet fellow vegan bloggers. Glad to have discoverd your blog!
I’ve spent some time in Cambridge for a course in ’99, lovely city! Lots of history
I also like growing vegs, we do have a vegetable garden though.
Do you grow yours in containers on a terrace?
    greets from Belgium!

    1. Thanks for your lovely comments, it’s nice to hear from you. We do grow our veggies in pots just outside. We don’t have a garden but I don’t let that stop me πŸ™‚
